Dear [Recipient / Ministry / IND],

Like many others, I moved to the Netherlands based on the current “five-year stay” rule leading to a residence permit or eligibility for naturalization. My decision to relocate was made with this understanding in mind — including my employment, housing, and, most importantly, my children’s education.

If the new rule is applied retroactively, it would cause significant uncertainty and hardship for families like mine who planned our lives according to the previous framework. Many of us have bought homes, enrolled our children in Dutch schools, and invested in building a stable life here. A sudden change would disrupt our children’s education and put us in an extremely difficult position, as organizing housing, schooling, and relocation on short notice is not feasible.

I understand that governments may revise policies, but I respectfully request that any new rule be applied only to newcomers, not to those who entered and settled in the Netherlands under the current regulation. This would ensure fairness and maintain trust in the Netherlands’ immigration and integration policies.

Thank you for considering this request. I hope that the final decision will take into account the impact on existing residents and their families.
