Subject: Objection to Proposed 10-Year Naturalisation Requirement
Dear [Ministry/Commission/To whom it may concern],
As an expat who has built my life in the Netherlands, I strongly oppose the proposed extension of the naturalisation eligibility period from 5 to 10 years.
This change would send the wrong message to residents who are already contributing to Dutch society—working, paying taxes, raising families, and integrating fully. Citizenship should support integration, not be a distant reward after a decade of waiting. Five years is already a significant and internationally common standard. Doubling that time risks alienating those who want to fully belong and participate in Dutch democratic life.
Extending the timeline will also make the Netherlands less attractive to international talent and long-term residents. It weakens social cohesion by keeping people in a legal and emotional limbo—fully contributing, but not fully included.
I urge you to protect the integrity of the current system and keep the naturalisation path fair, accessible, and in line with the values of inclusion and participation.
