It is an unbelievable betrayal of current residents hoping to naturalise to suddenly move the goalposts when they have invested time, money and their future years into becoming Dutch.
I am lucky. We moved to the Netherlands in 2020 and I learned Dutch in lockdown from books. I passed all A2 exams and because my husband is Dutch I could apply in 3 years to naturalise. I couldn’t wait to become a proud Dutch citizen. I had my ceremony in March and I have my passport.
But if suddenly for others this becomes ten years? To learn the language at B1 undoubtedly helps with integration but how are you any more integrated from 5 to 10 years? I say if you are not integrated enough at 5 then you will not be any MORE integrated at 10. And why the change of marriage from 3 to 5 years? You think people marry for convenience for 3 years? This is simply a knee-jerk response.
This change of direction would mean that The Netherlands is no longer the welcoming, inclusive country I love but a country that
Victimises good people who have contributed already a lot of their lives to integrating and wanting to be part of Dutch society. And it will do nothing to prevent the incoming of those you really do want to keep out.
If you proceed, you must make it transitional for those already studying and having moved here based on the 5 year plan.
