The proposed extension of the neutralisation period from 5 to 10 years feels unfair and counterproductive. Instead of addressing the real challenges of illegal immigration, this change seems to target those who are here legally, who have chosen to build their lives in the Netherlands, and who are actively working to integrate into society. Ironically, it may create the impression that people who arrive illegally by boat face fewer barriers, as they often receive support and benefits that even Dutch citizens do not.

If someone has no intention of integrating, doubling the waiting time will not change that. Integration is not a matter of years but of intention, support, and opportunity. A more effective approach would be to invest in better integration measures, education, and participation policies, rather than extending the path to citizenship.

Many skilled workers and families have made long-term plans based on the current rules. Suddenly changing such a fundamental regulation undermines trust in the system and unfairly disrupts the lives of people who have acted in good faith. And if it is now extended from 5 to 10 years, how can people be sure it will not change again to 15 years in a few years’ time? Such instability makes the Netherlands look unreliable for those already living here and discourages others who might want to move here in the future.

The Netherlands benefits when talented, motivated people feel secure and welcome. Making the process longer and more uncertain only harms both these individuals and the society they wish to fully contribute to.
