I would like to express my disagreement with the proposed extension of the naturalisation period from five to ten years.
One of the main reasons I chose the Netherlands as the place to migrate and build my future was the clear and fair pathway to Dutch citizenship after five years of legal residence. Based on this rule, I have carefully planned my life, career, and integration into Dutch society. Extending the period to ten years fundamentally changes the expectations for people like me, who already contribute to Dutch society and planned our lives around the current legislation.
Such a change would not only disrupt personal and professional plans but could also make the Netherlands a less attractive destination for highly skilled migrants who want to fully commit to the country. Stability, clarity, and fairness in migration rules are essential for successful integration and for maintaining trust between newcomers and the government.
I therefore respectfully urge the government to reconsider this proposal and maintain the current five-year naturalisation term.
