I write to express my strong opposition to the proposed extension of the naturalization period in the Netherlands from five years to ten years.
As a highly skilled migrant, I have dedicated myself to building a life here. Over the years, I have worked hard, paid taxes, learned the Dutch language, and made continuous efforts to integrate into Dutch society. My intention has always been to contribute meaningfully to the Netherlands and to make this country my permanent home. Importantly, I have done so without relying on Dutch social resources.
Extending the naturalization requirement to ten years would send a discouraging message to international talent. It risks undermining the Netherlands’ reputation as a country that values innovation, inclusivity, and global competitiveness. Highly skilled professionals from around the world may think twice before committing their futures here, knowing that the path to full integration and citizenship is being pushed further out of reach.
The Netherlands thrives on its openness to international expertise and its ability to attract and retain top talent. Making the naturalization process more restrictive runs counter to this strength and could weaken the country’s position in the global economy.
I urge policymakers to reconsider this proposal and to maintain the five-year requirement for naturalization. Doing so will ensure that the Netherlands continues to stand as a welcoming, forward-looking nation that both values and benefits from the contributions of those who choose to make it their home.
