I am strongly convinced that increasing the naturalization period from 5 to 10 years will negatively impact the tax revenues collected by the Kingdom of the Netherlands—both now and even more so in the future.

Currently, neighboring countries like Germany and France (and others worldwide) are often more attractive, due to their lower living costs, the high demand for languages like German, and their favorable policies towards highly skilled migrants. For example, it is possible to obtain a passport after 5 years in Germany, and in France, with a C1 level of French, in as little as 3 years.

Looking forward, extending the citizenship period to 10 years could cause the Netherlands to lose the last remains of its past prestige: high-tech businesses are already hesitant to operate here due to difficulties in dismissing employees, and migrants find little incentive to move to a country with poor climate, a housing crisis, and other challenges—especially when there is no clear path toward naturalization that would define their lives for many years to come. The difference between 5 and 10 years is substantial.

If such a law must be enacted, it should exclude those who have already arrived in the Netherlands and are currently working here. However, it would be better not to implement such a law at all, since the majority of taxes are paid by migrants and companies that depend on migrant talent. This is a fact.
