I am an international professional currently based in the Netherlands. Like many fellow expats, I chose to live and work here because of the country’s openness to highly skilled migrants and its strong values of inclusivity, innovation, and global cooperation.

The proposed extension of the citizenship residency requirement from five to ten years is deeply troubling. This change would create significant uncertainty for many skilled professionals who have built their lives, financial plans, and future goals around the existing system. It may also reduce the Netherlands’ appeal to international talent at a time when expertise and innovation are vital to sustaining the nation’s economic and technological edge.

A fair, stable, and transparent immigration policy is key to preserving the Netherlands’ image as an open and progressive country. I respectfully urge the government to reconsider this proposal and retain the current five-year route to citizenship, which fosters integration, stability, and shared commitment between skilled migrants and Dutch society.
