I strongly oppose extending the naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years. The current 5-year rule already provides a fair balance, allowing migrants to prove their commitment while building stable lives here. Extending it would create unnecessary instability for families, discourage integration, and harm the Dutch economy.
As a scientist at a Dutch university working on sustainable subsurface usage, one of the country’s key challenges, I contribute daily to Dutch society. Yet this proposal would make me feel excluded and undervalued. Skilled migrants are essential taxpayers, innovators, and community members; delaying their citizenship risks driving talent to countries like Germany (5 years) or France (3 years) that offer clearer, faster paths.
If this law must be introduced, it should at least exclude those who already live and work in the Netherlands under the current rules. Otherwise, the country risks losing both talent and trust.
For these reasons, I urge the government to keep the naturalisation period at 5 years.
