I agree that the residence year requirement should be increased. 10 to 15 years is a reasonable length.
I’m an immigrant in the Netherlands. A few years ago, when i was preparing for the naturalisation, i was surprised how low the naturalisation requirements were!! Dutch citizenship is too easy!!
At this age of globalisation, more globalised than ever, more and more people are moving internationally. 5 years is just a blink of eye. Therefore it’s necessary to adjust the naturalisation requirements. When water is flushing faster, you get to control it better, right?
Another issue. people being naturalised easily is not really a problem itself. However, the more serious problem is, in my experience living in the Netherlands for quite some years already, the kind of people who got the citizenship. In today’s Dutch society, i constantly bump into people (always of certain immigrant backgrounds!!) who do not show respect to others, who are rude, who make harassment and nuisance, and make public an unsafe space. My god. I wonder how bitter this reality is for the native people. And i wonder how stupid a government must be to let in these trouble-making people.
Therefore, i strongly believe, regarding immigration policies and naturalisation requirements, and for the benefits of the Netherlands: be more selective, be stricter.
Not only the residence year requirement should be higher. The overall naturalisation requirements should be higher too. Look at the requirements for foreign spouses: 3 years, even living abroad, ridiculous.
And higher language requirement, stricter integration.
Residence year requirement for permanent residence should be increased too. 5 years is too low.
