The length of the naturalization period is one of the most important factors in the decision-making process of highly skilled migrants when choosing the Netherlands. Extending this period risks reducing the country’s attractiveness for international talent, which in turn could have long-term consequences for innovation, competitiveness, and economic growth.
For this reason, I believe that a general extension of the naturalization period would not be beneficial. Instead, such measures should only be applied in specific cases, for example, for individuals with a criminal record within the last five years, or where particular circumstances such as refugee status require a tailored approach.
Maintaining a clear, predictable, and internationally competitive pathway to citizenship for skilled migrants is essential for ensuring that the Netherlands continues to be a top destination for global talent, while still safeguarding the integrity of the naturalization process.
