I have been living in the Netherlands for four years and working at a tech company. I would like to have a Dutch passport in a few years, but honestly, I don't feel Dutch. I don't have any Dutch friends, I don't speak Dutch, and I don't enjoy being around Dutch people. I prefer spending time with other expats. I'm not alone in this; almost all the other expats I know from work or my friends feel the same way. From a neutral point of view, I don't think I should have a Dutch passport anytime soon. It's fine if I work and live here as long as I have a job. However, I don't see why someone like me should be referred to as "Dutch" because I don't feel like it yet.

I see that this form/website is being shared among expat groups, and I see comments here where people threaten to leave the country. I think there's a misunderstanding: this law doesn't mean we can't work here anymore. As long as we have jobs, we can work and live here with nice salaries and a free place to live (rent-free, which you can buy and sell before leaving the country). We can also have a nice work/life balance. As highly skilled immigrants, having a Dutch passport should not be our main goal or the main reason we are in this country. Enjoy your time here. Contribute to society. Familiarize yourself with the culture. Learn the language. When the time comes, and if you feel like it, apply for citizenship.
