If this law is enacted, it will affect thousands of people who have chosen the Netherlands with the expectation of obtaining citizenship after five years. Such a measure, at least for highly skilled migrants, would be discouraging and could ultimately reduce the country’s intellectual capital. Moreover, requiring individuals to make commitments upon arrival and then changing the conditions midway risks driving away qualified talent that the Netherlands has already attracted.
