The Dutch government’s proposal to extend the citizenship period from 5 years to 10 years would make highly skilled migrants less integrated. Under the 5-year rule, people can start learning Dutch earlier and become part of society much sooner. In contrast, a 10-year period would only delay this process. Most highly skilled migrants would feel like second-class citizens and might prefer other countries, such as Germany, where naturalization happens more quickly. I believe this bill would drive highly skilled migrants away to countries where they can gain public rights, such as voting, much sooner and truly feel like citizens.
