Doubling the naturalisation period from 5 to 10 years is a deeply counterproductive move.

Instead of encouraging integration, it traps people in uncertainty for a decade, delaying their full participation in society. Families remain in limbo, unable to fully plan their futures. Skilled migrants who bring talent, taxes, and long-term commitment may simply choose other countries that value them sooner.

Citizenship isn’t just a legal status, it’s a foundation for belonging and stability. Making people wait 10 years sends the message that they are good enough to live and work here, but not good enough to belong. That’s harmful both for newcomers and for Dutch society as a whole.
