Dear Committee,
As an Artificial Intelligence Product Specialist with over nine years of professional experience, I have been closely following the Dutch innovation ecosystem for quite some time. I recently decided to pursue my entrepreneurial journey by building a startup within this ecosystem, given its reputation as one of the most supportive environments for innovation in Europe.
One of the key factors that influenced my decision to choose the Netherlands over other innovation hubs—such as Dubai—was the structure of the current five-year startup visa program. The phased approach, starting with one- and two-year periods, aligns very well with the natural stages of business development. This structure provides founders with a sense of security and predictability while also allowing them to plan realistically for the future. Personally, this framework gave me confidence that the Netherlands is not only investing in innovative entrepreneurs but also committed to their long-term success.
In contrast, ecosystems without such structured support, like Dubai, have never been as attractive to me or many other international founders. The Dutch model has therefore been a unique competitive advantage, ensuring that talented specialists see the Netherlands as a reliable base to grow their ventures.
By shifting the program from a five-year to a ten-year period, however, there is a risk that many highly skilled professionals and entrepreneurs will reconsider their choice and redirect their efforts toward other ecosystems that provide more immediate and structured support. In my view, this could gradually weaken the strong innovation network the Netherlands has carefully built over the years—an ecosystem whose true results may only become visible decades from now.
I strongly believe that preserving the strengths of the current five-year structure is essential for maintaining the Netherlands’ competitive edge in attracting global talent and fostering innovation-driven growth.
Sincerely,
