Extending the naturalisation period for Dutch citizenship from the current five years to ten would create unnecessary barriers to integration and social cohesion. A longer waiting time risks alienating residents who already contribute to Dutch society through work, taxes, and community life, yet are denied full rights and a sense of belonging. Citizenship is not only a legal status but also a foundation for participation and commitment; delaying it undermines inclusion and may discourage long-term residents from fully investing in Dutch society. Moreover, a ten-year requirement would place the Netherlands at odds with most European countries, where shorter naturalization periods are the norm, potentially harming the country's reputation as an open and forward-thinking nation. Instead of fostering loyalty, such an extension could create frustration, inequality, and a sense of exclusion among those who already consider the Netherlands their home and result in detachment.
