Extending the neutralisation process to 10 years is not advisable. A 5-year period already provides a sufficient and balanced timeframe to assess integration, commitment, and compliance with Dutch laws and values. Research across the EU shows that most member states maintain a 5–7 year requirement for naturalisation, with 5 years being the most common standard. Prolonging the Dutch process to 10 years would place the Netherlands among the strictest in Europe, which risks discouraging applicants, delaying their economic and social participation, and creating unnecessary barriers to integration. Maintaining the 5-year requirement ensures fairness, encourages active contribution, and strengthens trust between newcomers and the Dutch state.
