As two highly skilled migrants who have made the Netherlands our long-term home, we are deeply concerned about the proposal to extend the naturalisation term from 5 years to 10 years.
From the moment we arrived, we have worked to integrate into Dutch society — contributing through our jobs and taxes, investing by purchasing a home, and embracing Dutch culture and traditions in our daily lives. For us, becoming citizens is not simply a legal formality, but a way to secure our future here, belong fully to the community, and ensure that our voices are represented in the democratic process.
Extending the naturalisation period to 10 years would create unnecessary barriers for families like ours. It would prolong the uncertainty of our status, delay our ability to participate equally in society, and risk discouraging the very people who are committed to building their lives here. At a time when global competition for talent is intense, such a change could also make the Netherlands less attractive to highly skilled migrants who bring long-term value to the economy and society.
We respectfully urge the government to reconsider this proposal. Keeping the naturalisation period at 5 years better reflects the contributions and integration efforts of migrants like us, and helps ensure that the Netherlands remains a place where people are motivated to settle, invest, and thrive.
Thank you for your time and consideration. We sincerely hope our concerns will be taken into account in the decision-making process.
