I think there is little to gain by extending the period from 5yrs to 10 yrs. hence i strongly oppose this possible new law.
My reasoning is as follows:
1. Naturalisation can act as a strong incentive for migrants to invest in integration such as learning the language, participating in civic life, long-term planning. Delaying that incentive for twice as long can reduce motivation.
2. Citizenship provides not just rights but a sense of belonging, identity, psychological security. Delaying naturalisation means people remain in a kind of limbo for longer. This can undermine inclusion, reduce trust in institutions, and hamper participation.
3. Longer Naturalization means Highly skilled Migrants may be absorbed in other countries that provide more favourable route to Citizenship. Negatively affecting Dutch Innovation and spear heading in R&D.
4. Many people who have already met the 5-year requirement have started making life decisions (buying property, jobs, family) on expectation of naturalisation. Changing the rules midstream may feel unfair, especially if there is no grandfathering or transitional arrangements.
5. They might feel less secure in investing (in business, in property, in local community) if they see themselves as “temporary” or “without full rights” for a long stretch.
