The Netherlands heavily relies on migrant workers to sustain its industries, a fact that is widely acknowledged. While other countries are actively attracting skilled workers with incentives, the Netherlands appears to be taking a contrary approach, potentially becoming a less desirable destination for these individuals. Doesn't the government recognize the significant economic implications of this shift?

Prolonging the naturalization process by doubling the waiting period may actually discourage integration and encourage people to seek opportunities elsewhere. When migrants make the substantial decision to relocate to the Netherlands, leaving behind their established lives, they do so with the expectation of building a new future. The prospect of naturalization after five years has been a crucial factor in this decision-making process.

Given the sacrifices migrants make and their contributions to the country's development from the outset, extending the naturalization period to ten years raises questions about the ethics of such a policy. If the government proceeds with this proposal, it would be reasonable to make it non-retrospective, exempting those who have already made the decision to move to the Netherlands based on existing rules. This would allow individuals who are considering relocation to make informed decisions, taking into account the new requirements.
