I moved to the Netherlands two years ago as a highly skilled migrant. The fact that citizenship could be obtained after five years of residence was an important factor in my decision to relocate. I made my medium- and long-term life plans based on this timeframe.
Now, there is a proposal to extend this period to ten years. This feels like changing the rules after the game has started. It would be unfair if this change were applied retroactively to people who have already settled in the country and continue to contribute to society under the current rules.
If the intention is to introduce a longer period for newcomers, those who are already legally residing in the Netherlands and actively integrating should be exempt from this change. Moreover, it would not be fair to subject highly skilled migrants—who moved to the Netherlands on invitation and under specific conditions—to the same timeline as lower-skilled migrants.
Predictability and trust in the legal framework are essential for people who wish to build a stable life and contribute positively to Dutch society. Therefore, I believe that the proposed extension should not apply to current residents.
