My husband and I are very concerned about the proposed extension of the naturalisation term from 5 years to 10 years. 4 years ago we made the decision to move to The Netherlands. The ability to get full rights and security in 5 years played a key role in it. It's extremely unfair to learn that we and other individuals/families who chose The Netherlands as their long-term home, will have to wait another 5 years.
The ability to get Dutch citizenship is truly important, especially for people who are not from the EU. For people like us, becoming a citizen means security and equal rights. Even when we contribute to the economy, learn the language and make a positive impact, we don't feel we have any security on a daily basis with a temporary or permanent residence permit. What if the laws change tomorrow and impact our ability to stay in the country? Not having this basic security makes it hard to plan our lives.
People who have worked for years, paid taxes, and committed to becoming part of the Netherlands deserve predictable rules. The plan to double the naturalization period from five to ten years undermines the trust of these people. At the very least, they deserve to stay on the terms that they accepted when moving to The Netherlands.
We kindly request that the government consider the impact this change would have on entrepreneurs like us, who are committed to making the Netherlands our permanent home.
We appreciate your time and consideration, and we hope our feedback will be taken into account as part of the decision-making process.
Regards,
Ana
