The plan to extend the naturalization period from five to ten years is deeply unfair. Highly skilled migrants moved to the Netherlands on the clear understanding that citizenship could be obtained after five years. Families made life-changing decisions based on this rule: settling here, sending children to Dutch schools, paying higher taxes, and integrating into Dutch society.
Changing the rules now breaks that commitment. It damages trust in the government, discourages integration, and leaves families in unnecessary uncertainty. At the very least, the change should not apply to those who are already living here under the current law.
This proposal harms families and society alike. It should not move forward.
