Extending the naturalization period in the Netherlands from 5 to 10 years would do more harm than good. People who have already built their lives here—working, paying taxes, and being part of their communities—would be left waiting much longer to fully participate in society. Instead of encouraging integration, such a change could make people feel excluded, reduce trust in government, and even push skilled migrants to choose other countries where the path to citizenship is fairer and faster. At a time when the Netherlands needs both inclusivity and talent, making people wait twice as long to become citizens would be a step backwards for everyone.
