I would like to express my concern that extending the naturalization period will negatively impact highly skilled expats who are currently contributing significantly to the Dutch economy in essential sectors. As taxpayers and active contributors, we help strengthen the economy, and making the Netherlands less appealing for both current and prospective skilled immigrants could have a long-term negative effect. For example, Germany has reduced its naturalization period to as little as three years in some cases and allows dual nationality. By increasing the waiting time and enforcing renunciation of one’s original citizenship, the Netherlands might become less competitive compared to neighboring countries, which could ultimately have a negative economic impact.
