Wat vindt u van de concept regelgeving?
Honestly, I think this is a little bit like closing the barn door after the horse has bolted. It's clearly only going to result in a deluge of unregulated products flooding a black market, or DIY flavor-making kits that are far more likely to result in negative health effects. Why not also ban all sales of sweet or fruit-flavored alcohol? Or hey, why not just ban all sugary things completely?
This is a reactionary, half-baked and myopic measure that will ultimately do no good for public health. Meanwhile, I am fairly sure that cigarette manufacturers will be licking their lips in delight at this law. Keep an eye on the markets and tell me I'm wrong. This is patronizing nanny-state behavior in a country once heralded as a bastion of tolerance and common-sense policies around soft drugs. Can we first get all of the knives and guns out of the hands of young people, before we focus on their passionfruit vape juice?
That cigarette sales are allowed to continue while safer alternatives are not – because they might later encourage
or lead to smoking – is perversely illogical, and speaks to me about some of the political stakes of this legislation, and the stakeholders who stand to gain... This has little to do with public health, and more to do with reactionary hysteria around vaping.
The awful health effects of unregulated and unsafe products are clear, however, it is not fair or wise to tar the entire industry of safe, regulated products with this same brush. An outright ban an all flavored products is simply unfair to those responsible vendors who sell regulated products, and is extremely patronizing to those adults who choose this safer alternative to smoking. It's bad legislation, and I urge that it be reconsidered with a more measured approach, which focuses on specificially on tighter control around the sale of these products to children, and accountability therein.
Thank you for reading,
