This law proposal establishes an unprecedented crackdown on free speech and if applied will forever hamper our democracy.
In an extremely unfair move, this law intends to put at the same level organized extremist and violent movements and socially engaged civilians who use their right of expression and their right to demonstrate. Regardless of their positioning, citizens can see and understand the disproportionateness of such repression and will not forget it. As such, History will not forget the images of elderly people being arrested in the UK and the police brutality against peaceful demonstrators in Germany who are opposing a genocide. The Netherlands cannot and should not go down in History books like this as well.
On stamping down on legitimate mass movements of people, this law will feed into one of the main characteristics of dictatorships which is the limitation of freedom of expression and freedom to demonstrate.
