Protesting against a country’s political decisions should be legal no matter what — this is what democracy is all about. Throughout history, many so-called terrorist organizations have later come to be seen not as terrorists, but as symbols of resistance and of standing up to fascism. If such organizations had been criminalized for protesting at the time, it would have meant that, even when fighting for the right cause, no one could have stood up to present an alternative point of view that was unclear or inconvenient to the government. Sometimes it is as simple as opposing a government’s decision on a specific topic — and that is exactly what democracy is: letting the people themselves decide what is considered terrorism and what is not.
We are living in a very politically corrupt era, where most politicians are controlled or influenced by specific foreign agendas or interests, and they often do not represent or reflect the reality on the ground. So, if politicians do not reflect the people’s opinions at the moment, the least that can be done is to allow people the freedom to criticize and oppose.
Last but not least, I came to the Netherlands because of its so-called democracy, and this was one of my main reasons for choosing this country. So please, protect freedom of speech and democracy — this is what makes this country great.
Best regards,
Mahmoud Ibrahim
