To the Esteemed Authorities,
With great respect, we address you as a long-established and internationally recognized Ayurveda clinic. Since 1992, our clinic in Bad Ems has been dedicated to the authentic principles of Ayurveda, supporting thousands of individuals in maintaining balance and well-being through a holistic approach that includes carefully selected Ayurvedic dietary supplements. Among these, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has been an integral part of traditional Ayurvedic practice for centuries.
We have learned with deep concern that Dutch authorities are considering a ban on Ashwagandha. Such a measure would significantly restrict access to a natural dietary supplement that has been safely used for generations in Ayurveda.
Ashwagandha is classified in Ayurveda as a Rasayana, meaning it is traditionally valued as part of a balanced lifestyle. Used in accordance with Ayurvedic principles, it is considered beneficial for overall well-being.
It is important to acknowledge that while Ayurveda prescribes Ashwagandha root powder in its natural form, some highly concentrated extracts and isolated Withanolides—produced outside Ayurvedic traditions—may have raised regulatory concerns. However, it is crucial to differentiate between traditional Ayurvedic preparations and modern extracts.
For over 40 years, Maharishi Ayurveda has been producing polyherbal formulations containing Ashwagandha root powder, adhering to stringent European and international quality standards. These supplements are used by individuals who follow Ayurvedic principles as part of their daily routine. No adverse effects have been reported from our traditionally prepared products.
A general ban on Ashwagandha would not only deprive individuals in the Netherlands and Europe of access to a widely recognized dietary supplement but also limit consumer choice regarding traditional plant-based nutrition. Ayurveda is a globally respected system of well-being, and Ashwagandha remains a key component in its dietary approach.
We urge the Dutch government to reconsider this measure and ensure that traditionally prepared Ashwagandha remains available. A more nuanced approach that distinguishes between authentic Ayurvedic formulations and modern extracts would be essential in making a fair and balanced decision.
With sincere appreciation for your attention, we remain hopeful for a thoughtful resolution.
