As a resident affected by noise in particular due to very low landing flights even though I am not necessarily close to Schiphol but just on the path to the Buitenveldertbaan runway I applaud the initiative to finally take measures. These are by far not ambitious enough but it’s at least a start.
I would agree with either the measures in package B or C with the following remarks/ recommendations.
- noise disturbance is not only given by the dB level but also by frequency. The area affected by Buitenveldertbaan landing flights in pick moments (which extend in a year on average to some 4-6 months due to maintenance works and W & NW winds) has days with 200-300 flights during day time. There are incoming flights every few minutes continuously. Reducing the number of flights using this pathway ( both in number & frequency) would result in a much more livable situation for the residents.
- establish& enforce better ‘routes’ for pilots not on a shortest way criterion but so that they avoid areas with residential houses as much as possible when flying lower than at a 600m altitude. A plane flying not above one’s home but parallel on a route 500m further away makes a difference. The idea is to be able to coexist- but not at the expense of people’s health and well-being.
- when setting the goal for when a runway like Buitenveldertbaan can be used specific conditions need to be agreed upon. The same argumentation:”we only use this runaway in case of strong west winds and when the other runways are busy/ closed” it’s what is known now and the traffic is tremendous- as mention above. Hence, put a capping on the number of flights allowed regardless of the weather conditions/ maintenance works.
Note: maintenance works have to be conducted without affecting the normal traffic on any of the runways. Schiphol should in those times reduce the total number of flights.
- install more noise & noise occurrence frequency measuring devices for a better picture of how these low flights affect the residential areas to get to more effective measures also long term.
- redistribute flights incoming on Schiphol also to other airports
