Vraag1

1. If you look at the 3 regions that we focus on (MENA, Horn of Africa, Sahel) – can you mention specific trends per region which are relevant for the strategy. Are there, for example, specific sectors where there is much to be gained? Or specific skills that young people lack in a certain region or sector?
IDH is developing a program to address sustainable manufacturing in Ethiopia. It is essential that the job market in Ethiopia grows rapidly as the population of Ethiopia will grow over 70% in the next 30 years, to over 170 million people. Between 1-2 million job seekers will enter the job market in Ethiopia each year whilst in addition, approximately 1million refugees are now also technically allowed to enter the job market. The newly emerging industrial sector is an exciting opportunity to establish a sustainable industrial model, particularly in the labor-intensive textile sector, where global brands are under the scrutiny of conscious consumers to uphold decent working conditions. The importance of this is compounded by the fact that job creation in agriculture are increasingly limited and further limited by global warming. For Ethiopia’s new industrial parks and the communities that surround them, it is essential to scrutinize how these new manifestations are integrated well, so that they may mutually benefit each other. Together, we have the opportunity of ensuring that the fundamentals of decent work and clean production practices are established, which help both the industrial parks and their surrounding communities thrive, leading to the creation and retention of new jobs in the region.

Vraag2

2. Do you have examples of successful "scaled up" initiatives / programs in the field of education and work to increase youth employment, and if so, which ones? Or do you know of certain successful initiatives that are worth scaling up in the 3 regions mentioned?
In the past, IDH has successfully worked on sustainable manufacturing practices in a.o. Vietnam. Based on this track record in Asia, IDH has been approached by both industry operating in Ethiopia, as well as the Ethiopian Government, to explore opportunities to support the sustainable development of the textile sector in Ethiopia.

Vraag3

3. Do you have specific ideas or additions about how we can make young people part of this policy? How do we ensure that they participate in the implementation of this strategy?

IDH is currently working with local government partners, expert organizations, and private sector to see how job-related training and tools that boost entrepreneurship particularly for the young women can strengthen these types of policies. (95% of textile workers in the industrial parks are women between the age of 18-30)
