Graag vernemen wij uw reactie op het conceptwetsvoorstel tot wijziging van de Opiumwet.
I am a psychology student studying and living in Holland for over 3 years now. I do not thing that the correct response to these psychoactive substances is to just outright ban them, there are many studies currently being aided with the help of some of these substances that try and help people with underlying medical conditions and mental problems. For a long time now the propaganda against certain psychoactive drugs has shaped our collective understanding of these chemicals but there is way more good and beneficial to be had than the propaganda would want us to believe. Without access to proper chemical agents, correct studies on how these psychoactive chemicals work on the brain and how some chemicals can be beneficial to certain individuals become next to impossible to do in any scientific manor. The best response would be to start educating on the actual effects these substances have rather than blanket banning everything that is "too hard" to explain to someone still under the impression that psychoactive substances are bad for you. What makes these chemicals less or more dangerous than alcohol? We do have extensive research done on how the psychoactive drug Alcohol ruins lives, livers and most importantly is very damaging to the liver and brain development. The only thing stopping us from conducting research on these novel psychoactives are their legal status and that should not be the case. Secondly, this amendment should be considered as not pro-active to stop the illegal sales of substances, in all evidence, it is pointing to the RISE in sales of illicit substances as the ones that are getting banned are still in a legal-grey-area. This will not only see the rise of black-market sales, but also a rise in current 'street-class' drugs to become cut with other potentially more deadly chemicals as a result of this ban, leading to a rise in chemical overdoses, and since we cannot study these chemicals it is likely that even medical professionals will not know how to deal with cases of overdoses that will be caused by this sudden influx of new black-market chemicals. I hope that his amendment will have a thorough consideration as I do not find it morally okay or ethically fine, the 'war on drugs' needs to stop as it is only hindering our understanding of how our brains work, understanding of ourselves and understanding of these chemicals that could prove to be beneficial to some with mental complications. Thank you for your consideration.
